Teenagers crawl bloody out of a wreck on Main Street. At a high school dance a 14 year old girl is found in the bathroom dying of acute alcohol poisoning. A drunk teen drowns at a state park. A panel discussion on DWI turns into a near riot as panelist attack each other.
All tragedies? Sort of. Except, tonight no one actually got hurt because all
these events are
Guerilla Theatre*
*Unannounced performances for an unsuspecting audience
coming to a parking lot, high school, state park, or mall near you.
The Improvisation for Education Players (IFE) is an acting troupe that uses
drama, role playing and street theatre to provoke meaningful discussions on
the social issues facing all of us. IFEs can perform skits, role play and respond
in character or totally surprise the community with a consciousness shaking
guerilla theatre street performance.
But Why? Why not just role play or do skits like everyone else?
? The severity of the issues IFE often deals with (underage drinking, date rape,
hate crime) don’t fit well in ten minute skits.
? We are desperate. Many of these issues need action now. IFE wants to promote
not only meaningful discussion but action.
? We have to keep up with the Joneses. The media and industries are spending
billions to make sure there messages get to you. IFE needs to be just as provocative
to get a message not based in profit, but community out too.
What about the Risks?
? We do everything we can to secure the safety of the actors and the “audience.”
IFE performers are trained in being safe during performances and how to host
difficult post performance discussions.
? IFE almost always works with the police and other emergency personnel.
Don’t people get frightened?
? Yes, some people respond to our performances with fear but that is not our
intention. Our intention is to raise awareness to the frightening consequences
of things like not confronting hate speech in our schools.
Don’t people get mad?
? They sure do. After the performance we hand out informational flyers explaining
the performance and invite as many of the “audience” to discuss
the event and the issue.
? IFE believes that the devastation caused by DWI, underage drinking and dating
violence should have all of us mad. An angry response to the performance may
be entirely appropriate. IFE also believes angry letters to news papers or angry
callers to radio shows are very important to forming an alternative voice to
the media.
